A Different
Approach
The system we were handed treats the mind like a fire to be contained. We believe the fire is trying to tell you something. This is a place built to walk with you — not to manage you, medicate the meaning out of you, or hold you inside a diagnosis. A place that brings people through mental illness, not just around it.
We don’t treat the storm.
We teach you to sail it.
Scarlet Beast has always been about hunting truth in a world of shadows. Mental illness is one of those shadows — and the truth inside it is that you were never broken. You were overwhelmed, unheard, and alone in it. Those are three things we can change.
The clinical world is good at naming what’s wrong and slowing it down. It is not built to walk beside you at 3 a.m., to tell you it survived the same night, to remind you that the diagnosis is a weather report — not a life sentence. That work belongs to people who have been where you are. That is what this is.
We call it a different approach because it refuses the two lies the system tells: that you are your illness, and that getting “stable” is the whole goal. Stability is a floor, not a destination. The goal is to move through the dark to a life with meaning, agency, and people in it — carrying what you learned in the fire instead of pretending it never burned.
Lived, Not Learned
Everything here comes from someone who has walked it — not a chart, not a script. Peer to peer, human to human, shame taken off the table.
Through, Not Around
We don’t hide the wound or numb it silent. We help you carry it, understand it, and use it — until it stops running the house.
You Keep the Wheel
No one here decides your life for you. You are the author. We just help you remember you were holding the pen the whole time.
Write it down while you’re well
A psychiatric advance directive is a legal document that says how you want to be treated in a crisis: the medications you agree to and the ones you refuse, where you want care, what helps, and who speaks for you when you can’t. It is how you keep the wheel even on your worst night.
Our free builder walks you through it step by step for all 50 states and DC, and prints a directive shaped to your state’s law plus a wallet card. Nothing you type leaves your device.
A film from the inside
SCARLET BEAST is the animated story of our founder’s life: twelve years in and out of Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, a medication that nearly killed him, and the long walk through to a life with meaning. It treats mental illness with dignity, never as a horror show.

A Path Through — Not Around
Not rules. Not a religion. Twelve movements we’ve watched carry real people out of the dark — take them in any order, at any pace, as many times as you need.
We stopped pretending we were fine, and said the true thing out loud.
We came to see that we are not the illness — we are the one who survived it.
We let one safe person see the part of us we were taught to hide.
We named the wound without letting it name us.
We forgave the mind for what it did while it was drowning.
We learned the difference between a feeling and a fact.
We took back one small choice — then another.
We let ourselves be helped without calling it weakness.
We turned toward meaning instead of numbness.
We found the others walking the same dark, and stopped walking alone.
We began to carry a light for someone still in the tunnel.
We lived — not “cured,” but whole, and moving through.

Want to start a Mental Health Circle?
A circle is a small, steady group of people who meet to hold each other through — peer-led, no professionals required, no shame allowed.
If you’re interested in starting a Mental Health Circle — in your town, your church, your recovery group, your corner of the internet — we would gladly appease the request. Reach out and we’ll help you get one off the ground: how to gather people, how to hold space safely, and how to keep it going.

I am a mental health consumer — a person with lived experience of mental illness who offers peer support and encouragement. I am not a mental health professional, a doctor, a therapist, or a counselor, and nothing here is medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
If you are in an emergency, or you are thinking about harming yourself or someone else, call 911 or your local emergency number right now. In the US you can also call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any time, day or night.
Talking with me is not a substitute for professional care. If you have a therapist, doctor, or crisis team, please keep working with them. What I offer is a human being who has been there, walking beside you — not in place of the help you deserve.
