Changelog
What’s new
What changed on this site, newest first: new help pages and tools, essays and films, and the fixes that make it more private, easier to use and more truthful.
Every change on this page was built with AI (Claude), and this log is written with it too. Updates marked AI steward (12 so far) were chosen, built and checked by our autonomous AI steward, which looks after the site between the founder’s own work. Our AI policy.
Lighter pages: heavy images now load as WebP
23 of the heaviest images on 21 pages (essay heroes, film posters, the Join Now and Donate posters, the Pricing Promises artwork) now load as WebP copies, with the originals kept. Loading each of the 50 main pages once on a phone and once on a desktop now downloads 3.4 MB less in images than before, and Pricing Promises alone went from a 2.3 MB picture to 43 KB. Photos and posters in the uploads folder can now also be cached by your browser for 30 days, so return visits are faster.
Pricing Promises →This page, and RSS feeds for it and the essays
A dated log of what changes on the site, linked from every page's footer. The essays now have a real feed with every essay's full text, and this page has one too. Paste either address into any feed reader to get new work without an account, an email address or an algorithm in between.
Essays feed →Say no to tracking, and the site listens
Every page now honours Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends it, Google Analytics never loads. Anyone can also switch analytics off with one button on the privacy page, and the switch deletes the cookies too. The old comment forms on 181 image pages, which took people's typing and then failed, now say comments are closed and give an email address instead.
The analytics switch →Our films now have captions
Seven films hosted on this site carry English closed captions: Crowned in Thorns, Hurt Has a Sound, Prophecies Fail, Scarlet Beast (Revelation 17:22), Dominate Fear. Surrender to Love., the Scarlet College film and the film teaser. The words come from each film's own lyric sheet or script, not a machine's guess. Press CC in the player.
Watch Hurt Has a Sound →The NYC food and shelter list, in Spanish
All 54 free food pantries, soup kitchens, mobile markets and help lines on Kong New York's list are now in Spanish too, with the same checked numbers and sources, search that works in either language, and the Spanish hunger line at the top. The translation is AI-made and says so.
Comida y refugio gratis →Easier to use by keyboard, screen reader and low vision
A sitewide pass added a Skip to content link, a visible focus ring, readable contrast and respect for the reduce-motion setting. An automated check went from 940 serious problems on 34 pages to none. A new accessibility statement lists what was tested, what was fixed and what is still wrong.
Accessibility statement →Ayuda ahora: a Spanish crisis page
A Spanish version of Get help now: call 988 and press 2, text AYUDA to 988 or 741741, lines for domestic violence and sexual assault, Poison Control, 311 and 211, a printable pocket card and a quick-exit button. Each Spanish option was checked on the service's own site, and where we could not confirm one, the page says so.
Ayuda ahora →Search results now describe each page truthfully
Every page used to hand search engines and link previews the same old description. Now 246 pages carry their own words, leftover WordPress pages and image pages are hidden from search (nothing was deleted), and the sitemap lists the pages that were missing from it.
Sitemap →NYC food and shelter list: every number checked, 19 fixed
All 54 resources on Kong New York's list were checked against each organisation's own website. 19 cards were corrected for wrong phone numbers, moved pantries and dead websites. Each card now shows where it was checked, and a 911 and 988 strip sits at the top.
The NYC list →Get help now: one page for the worst night
988, 911, crisis lines for veterans, LGBTQ+ people and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, Poison Control, 311 and 211 for shelter and food, five steps if you are worried about someone, a printable pocket card and a quick-exit button. The page runs no analytics, and every page on the site links to it from the footer.
Get help now →A lighter homepage and donate page
The homepage's background film was re-encoded (3.7 MB down to 1.2 MB on phones) and the donate page's posters became responsive images (the page went from 8.6 MB to 1.4 MB). Nothing looks different; it just arrives faster on a weak signal.
Donate page →A privacy policy written from the code, not a template
A plain-language privacy policy that lists what the site actually loads and where it goes. The free psychiatric advance directive builder stopped running analytics at the same time, so its promise that your answers stay on your device sits on a page that tracks nothing.
Privacy policy →Press release: the free PAD builder
The newsroom now leads with the release for our free psychiatric advance directive builder.

Essay: Dominate Fear. Surrender to Love.
Two states, fear or love, and two ways to move, dominance or surrender. Most of us pair them the wrong way round. With the short film made from it.
Read the essay →We stopped calling Scarlet Beast a nonprofit
Scarlet Beast's New Jersey nonprofit charter was revoked and it has no IRS exemption, so the footers on about 290 pages and the site's structured data no longer say otherwise.
About Scarlet Beast →
