When someone is using your name

For people in the United States whose card, bank account, Social Security number, tax refund, medical insurance or child’s information has been used by someone else, for people holding a data breach notice, and for the people beside them. The three steps for today. A fraud alert and a credit freeze, and how they differ. How to close accounts you never opened and clear your credit report. The deadlines on a lost card. What to do when the IRS says you already filed. What to say on the phone. Take only what you need today.

Right now

  • A card is lost or stolen, or money is leaving your account? The Federal Trade Commission says to call, or get on the mobile app, and report it to the bank or credit union that issued the card as soon as possible. It says federal law says you’re not responsible to pay for charges or withdrawals made without your permission if they happen after you report the loss. Use the number on the card or on a statement.
  • You know which company it happened at? IdentityTheft.gov, the Federal Trade Commission’s site, says to call its fraud department, explain that someone stole your identity, and ask them to close or freeze the accounts. Then report it at IdentityTheft.gov or 1-877-438-4338.
  • Someone on the phone says your identity was stolen and you must move your money to keep it safe? IdentityTheft.gov’s words: the FTC will never threaten you, say you must transfer your money to “protect it,” or tell you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone. That’s a scam. Hang up.
  • Thinking about ending your life? Call or text 988, at any hour. In danger right now: 911.

More help

General information from people who care, not legal or financial advice. We are not lawyers, a credit bureau, a bank or a government agency. We can’t tell you whether a company will remove a charge, what your state’s law adds, or how long any of this will take. The agencies named here, your bank, or a legal aid office in your state can. We will never ask you for a Social Security number, an account number or a password, and nothing in this guide asks you to type one. In an emergency, call 911.

This page and its wording were written with AI (Claude) for Scarlet Beast (our AI policy). No lawyer, banker or fraud investigator has reviewed it, and it was not written by someone this has happened to: an AI has no name to steal and no savings to lose, and cannot know what it is to see a stranger’s debts under your own. The facts come from pages read on October 6, 2026. From IdentityTheft.gov, the Federal Trade Commission’s site: its recovery steps (every checklist, opened in full), its page on information that was lost, stolen or part of a data breach (the parts on credit, Social Security numbers, passwords and card numbers), its Know Your Rights page, and its front page. From the Federal Trade Commission’s consumer pages: What To Know About Identity Theft (September 2024), Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts (August 2025), Lost or Stolen Credit, ATM, and Debit Cards (January 2022), What To Know About Tax Identity Theft (October 2024), What To Know About Medical Identity Theft (September 2024), How To Protect Your Child From Identity Theft (October 2024), and its February 2026 alert on unemployment benefits you didn’t file for. From the Internal Revenue Service: its identity theft guide for individuals and its page on the identity protection PIN. From USAGov: its identity theft page (last updated July 22, 2025). From the Social Security Administration: its short page on reporting a stolen number. The page says whose words it is passing on, and what is marked “ours” is our own suggestion and not from any agency. What we did not read: the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act or any other law or regulation itself, any state’s law, the three credit bureaus’ own sites, AnnualCreditReport.com, the sample letters themselves, IRS Form 14039 and its instructions, the IRS’s pages on employment-related identity theft and on how its victim assistance works, the Federal Trade Commission’s page on free credit reports, the E-Verify, ChexSystems, NCTUE, State Department, Department of Labor, Medicare, Medicaid and HealthCare.gov sites, and the parts of IdentityTheft.gov on Small Business Administration loans and investment accounts beyond what is said here. So the page does not describe them. We did not call any number, and we did not read any line’s hours except the one the Federal Trade Commission gives for interpreters. Laws, limits and pages change: check with the source before you rely on one. This page saves nothing: no account, no cookies, nothing you tick or choose is stored or sent, and no analytics (privacy). Your browser will still remember that you visited, as it does for any page; a private window does not. It was checked by programs, not yet used by people. Scarlet Beast is not a law office, a credit bureau, a credit monitoring company or a government agency, and takes no money from anyone named here. Found a mistake? Email [email protected].

Every Node Counts

Signal over noise.

No middlemen, no discovery-call gauntlet, no lead-nurture sequence. One message reaches the person who would do the work.
