House agreement: what we agreed about living together
In a shared home, small things that repeat can wear people down: the dishes, the noise at night, a guest who stays, who paid for what. This page is for housemates, families, couples and anyone sharing a room or a house who would like those things said once, plainly, and written down. It takes who lives here, who does which job and how often, and what you agreed in seven short parts, and lays it out as one sheet with a line for each person to sign. Some people call this a roommate agreement or house rules. There is no account and no price.
Good to know
How it works
- Who lives here: add each person, up to 8. A name for the home, the date and a time to look at the agreement again are optional. A button puts in today’s date.
- Who does what: one line for each job, with who does it (one person, everyone, or taking turns) and how often. Twelve common jobs are there as buttons; a button only fills the job box, and you can type any job of your own.
- What we agreed: seven parts, each with four ways to start a sentence. A button puts those few words at the end of the box; the rest of the sentence is yours, and you can change or delete the start.
- Our agreement shows the sheet as it prints, with a signature line for each person.
- Print or save as PDF opens your device’s print window. On most computers and phones that window has a choice named Save as PDF, or something close to it, which makes a file you can send to everyone in the home.
- Copy as text and Download (.txt) give plain text to paste into a group chat or an email.
What this page can’t do
- It does not write your agreement. There is no AI inside this tool; it lays out what you type.
- It does not decide what is fair. An even split is not always the fair one, and only the people in the home know their hours, health and money.
- It cannot make anyone keep to what was agreed. It is a sheet of paper.
- It cannot tell you what this paper means in law. It is not a lease and does not replace or change one, or the house rules of a landlord or a program. Whether a signed paper between people who live together counts for anything in a court depends on where you live and what it says, and this page does not know. When you need a lawyer and can’t pay is the page about free legal help.
- It holds one agreement at a time, and it will not remind anyone of a job or a date.
- Your agreement does not move to another phone or computer by itself. Print it, download it, or use My data on this device to carry a backup across.
Which words are yours, and which are the page’s
- The names, the jobs and the seven parts are yours. The page does not change them.
- The twenty-eight sentence starters and the twelve common jobs are fixed lists, written ahead of time with AI. If you press one, those few words are in your agreement until you change them.
- The page adds the title (House agreement), the headings, and “The home we share” if you leave the name of the home empty.
- The page adds one sentence at the foot of the sheet: “This paper is between the people who live here. It is not a lease and is not meant to change one.”
- The page adds a line for each person to sign and date. Signing is up to you.
- Nothing on the printed page names this website.
Ideas for making it together
- Pick a time when no one is angry and no one is rushing out the door.
- Everyone whose name is on the sheet has a say. One person can type; the words belong to all of you.
- It can start small. One job and one part, about the thing that comes up most, is already an agreement.
- Write what will be done, by whom and by when. “Dishes are washed before bed” is easier to keep than “be more considerate”.
- Changing it later is part of the plan. Lives change: a new job, a new baby, a night shift.
- For the talk itself, Make peace helps plan how to raise a hard thing, and How I work is one page that tells a housemate what helps you and what stress looks like on you.
These are everyday ideas in our own words. They are not advice from a mediator or a counselor, and they do not suit every home.
Tools that go with this
- Make peace: a hard talk or an apology, planned before you say it.
- When anger takes over: one guided minute, and words to step away from a fight.
- How I work: a guide to you, for the people you live or work with.
- Money plan and Bills this month: the money side, added up.
- When home isn’t safe: for anyone being hurt, threatened or controlled at home.
- When you need a place to stay, and Coming home from jail or prison.
- All the free tools, and how to save them on your phone.
The tool, the sentence starters, the list of common jobs and the wording around it were written with AI (Claude) for Scarlet Beast (our AI policy); the agreement itself is written by the people who live in the home. The layout and the ideas on this page were not reviewed by a mediator, a lawyer or a housing counselor. Also in Spanish: Acuerdo de convivencia; both pages keep the same agreement on this device, and each adds its fixed words in its own language. The page holds one agreement and keeps it until you erase it. Found a mistake? Email [email protected].
