Easier to read: text size, spacing and letters
Small, tight text is hard work on a bad day, with tired eyes, or when reading has never come easily. Choose a bigger text size, more room between the lines, plainer letters or underlined links here, once. The free tools and guides on this site will then open that way in this browser.
Good to know
What each setting does
- Text size makes everything in the middle of the page bigger: the words, the buttons and the boxes you type in. The page is laid out again to fit, so there is no sliding sideways.
- More room puts more space between lines, between words and between letters, and a little more between paragraphs.
- Plainer letters swaps the page’s lettering for a wide, simple one that is already on your device (Verdana or the nearest thing to it). Nothing is downloaded.
- Always underlined draws a line under every link in the text, so a link does not depend on colour alone.
Where it works
- On the one hundred and two free tools and guides, in English and in Spanish, and on the pages around them: the tools list, the search, Today, Get help now, First aid, the posters and Pass it on.
- Look for Aa Text size at the top of those pages, next to the link to the other language. It brings you here, and a button takes you back.
- It works in this browser on this device only. Another phone, another browser or a private window starts from the usual.
- If you saved pages for use without a signal before today, save them again to get this on the saved copies.
What it can’t do
- It does not change the top bar, the menu or the footer, and it does not reach the homepage, the essays, the music or the rest of the site.
- It does not change what you print. Printed sheets, cards and posters come out as they were designed.
- On a phone, a small screen or a narrow window the larger sizes are held back so the page still fits. The setting above tells you when that is happening.
- It cannot change the colours.
- With a hundred pages and four settings, something may look wrong somewhere: a button that wraps, a box that is cramped. If a page is harder to use this way, come back and choose the usual.
What we don’t know
- Whether any of this helps you. Some people find bigger text, wider spacing or plainer letters easier, and some do not. We make no promise about dyslexia, low vision or anything else: try it and keep what works.
- How it behaves on every phone and browser. A program opened every page with each setting and checked that nothing ran off the side of the screen. People using it day to day have not tested it yet, and nobody who uses a screen reader or a magnifier has checked it.
- Your device has its own tools that reach every site, not only this one: the browser’s zoom, a text size setting, and on many phones a reading mode. They work together with these settings.
Pages that go with this
- Read it my way: paste a letter or any long text and read it one sentence at a time, in the size and colours you choose.
- Accessibility: what we tested, what we fixed and what is still wrong.
- My data: see, back up or erase everything these tools have kept in this browser, this setting included.
- All the free tools, and search.
Sixty of the guides also have a Listen to this page button, which reads the page aloud with a voice from your own device where the browser has one.
