Put the free tools on your home screen
The one hundred and seven free tools and guides can sit on your phone like an app: one icon, one tap, and the list of tools opens in its own window. There is no app store, no account and nothing to pay. It is this website, opened a shorter way.
How to do it
Start from this page or from the tools list. Menu names change from one version to the next, so yours may read a little differently.
iPhone or iPad
- Open this page in Safari. (Since iOS 16.4, Chrome, Edge and other browsers can do it too.)
- Tap the Share button: the square with an arrow pointing up.
- Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen.
- If you see a switch named Open as Web App, leave it on.
- Tap Add.
It will most likely start empty. See “What you saved before” below.
Android phone or tablet
- If the button at the top of this page says Install on this device, press it and confirm.
- If there is no button: open the browser’s menu (in Chrome, the three dots).
- Look for Add to Home screen or Install, tap it, and confirm.
In Samsung Internet and Firefox the words differ a little, but the choice is in the browser’s menu too.
A computer
- Chrome or Edge: if the button at the top of this page says Install on this device, press it. Or look for a small install icon at the right end of the address bar, or for Install in the browser’s menu.
- Safari on a Mac: open the File menu and choose Add to Dock.
- Firefox on a computer may not offer this. A bookmark does the same job.
On a shared or library computer, don’t install it: the next person would find it there.
To take it off again
- iPhone or iPad: press and hold the icon, then choose Remove App or Delete Bookmark.
- Android: press and hold the icon and choose Uninstall or Remove, or drag it to Remove.
- A computer: open the app, open the menu at the top of its window, and choose Uninstall.
Taking it off may also erase what the tools kept inside it, above all on an iPhone or iPad. If there is something you want to keep, make a backup in My data first.
Good to know
What you get
- An icon that opens the tools list in its own window, without the browser’s address bar.
- The same pages as the website, and the newest version of each whenever you are online. There is nothing to update.
- On many Android phones and on computers, pressing and holding the icon (or right-clicking it) shows four shortcuts: Get help now, Today, Breathe and Search.
- It is free, there is no sign-up, and it asks your phone for no permissions.
What it is not
- It is not a program from an app store. It is this website in its own window, and it runs inside your browser.
- It does not work without a signal by itself. For that, open Take the help with you from inside the app and press Save.
- It cannot remind you of anything or send notifications.
- It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it is not a way to reach us in an emergency.
What you saved before
- The tools keep what you type in the browser, on your device. Nothing about that changes.
- On Android and on a computer with Chrome or Edge, the app is part of that browser, so what you saved there should still be there.
- On an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s browser team says a web app on the Home Screen is not part of Safari. Expect it to start empty: a safety plan or a diary you saved in Safari stays in Safari.
- To carry things across, open My data in Safari, download a backup file, then open My data inside the app and bring the file in. Pages you saved for no signal need saving again inside the app.
What we don’t know
- How it behaves on your phone. A program checked this page and the small file that describes the app. Nobody has yet added it to a real iPhone or Android phone and used it day to day.
- The steps were written on 4 October 2026 from what the makers of Safari and Chrome publish, not from trying each device.
- Inside the app’s window there is no address bar and, on an iPhone, no back button: swipe from the left edge to go back. A link to another website opens over the app or in your browser.
- If something goes wrong, the website itself is still there in your browser, the same as before.
Pages that go with this
- Take the help with you: save the tools so they open with no signal, no data and no Wi-Fi.
- My data: see, back up, move or erase everything these tools have kept in this browser.
- Today: one page that reads what ten of the tools saved and shows the day.
- Pass it on: any of these pages as a code to show on your screen or a slip to print.
- All the free tools, and search.
