Make an invoice, a receipt or an estimate: for work you did or a thing you sold
When you mow a yard, clean a house, fix a car or sell a couch, a sheet of paper that says what it was and what it cost helps both of you remember. Type who it is from, who it is for, and a line for each thing. This page multiplies, adds, and draws the paper on one sheet to print, or gives you the same thing as text to paste into a message.
Good to know
Before you hand it over
- Keep a copy for yourself. This page keeps none. Print two, save it as a PDF, or paste the text into a message to yourself.
- Read the numbers once. The page adds what you type; it cannot tell that 350 was meant to be 35.
- Think about what is on it. A name and a phone number or an email address is enough for someone to reach you. The paper does not need your home address, and this page has no box for a Social Security number or a bank account number.
- If someone pays more than the total and asks for the difference back, or wants a code sent to your phone, stop and open Is this a scam?
How the page counts
- In whole cents. Each line is how many times the price of one, to the nearest cent. Half a cent goes up: 1.5 of something at $33.33 is $49.995, which prints as $50.00.
- The percent is taken of the lines added together, once, to the nearest cent. 6.625% of $59.97 is $3.97.
- How many can have up to three places after the point (1.5 hours, 0.25 of a load), up to 9,999.999. Left empty, it counts as 1.
- The price of one can be up to $99,999.99. A minus sign in front takes money off.
- Commas: 1,234.50 is read as one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty cents. A comma with one or two digits after it, as in 12,50, is read as 12.50.
- Already paid is taken off the total, and the paper shows what is left.
What you can change
- The kind: an invoice, a receipt or an estimate. Only the word at the top changes.
- The words printed on it: in English or in Spanish, whichever language you read this page in. What you type is printed as you typed it.
- The lines: up to 12 of them, each with up to 60 characters of words.
- The names: up to 60 characters each, with up to 4 short lines under each name.
- The number and the date: both can be left off.
- The words at the bottom: up to 200 characters on up to 4 lines.
What this page does not do
- It keeps nothing. What you typed is gone when you close or reload the page, and it does not remember the last number you used.
- It does not know about taxes: not whether you have to charge a sales tax, not the percent, and not what you owe on what you earn. For free help with a tax return, open Taxes: free help.
- It does not know the rules where you live about what a paper like this has to say, or about the kind of work you do.
- It does not send the paper to anyone and does not take payment.
- It does not make anyone pay. If you worked for an employer and were not paid, open When something is wrong at work.
- It has been tried in one browser’s print preview (Chromium, saved as PDF), not on paper from a real printer. If the paper does not fit your sheet, the print window’s Scale setting makes it smaller.
Every time the page is built, a program checks 14 examples worked by hand, then makes 2,000 made-up papers and reads each one back with a second reader written a different way, which multiplies and adds again on its own: every line, the percent, the total and what is left. That checks the page’s own work, not your paper.
Tools that go with this
- Hours worked: keep your own record of the hours, then bring the total here.
- An amount in words: the total written out, for a check or a money order.
- Percent: a deposit, a discount or a tip worked out.
- Income per month: what uneven pay comes to.
- Make a flyer with tear-off strips: tell the neighbors about the work you do.
- Taxes: free help, and what to do if you can’t pay.
- Is this a scam?: a few questions about a payment or an offer.
- All the free tools, and how to save them on your phone.
The tool and the wording around it were written with AI (Claude) for Scarlet Beast (our AI policy). There is no AI inside this tool: it only multiplies, adds and lays out your words. It has been checked by a program, not yet by people printing it at home, and the Spanish has not been read by a native speaker. It keeps nothing, so it has no line on My data on this device. Also in Spanish: Haz una factura, un recibo o un presupuesto. Found a mistake? Email [email protected].
